En-Chant-Ment

Lyrics and Sound Clips

Welcome to my ever-growing collection of chants. There are a few sound clips available with more to come.. Use the bar below for quick access to chants alphabetically.

Please Note: I have attempted to trace specific authorship or cultural origin on as many chants as possible. However, the nature of the folk process by which they are learned in our community often renders a chant's origins elusive. I encourage anyone who has information about a chant's author or roots to write to Me. I will be happy to update my site and protect copyrighted material.

All discographical/historical information has moved to my Commentary page. I also don't know the proper names of some chants, so I have just assigned them names for my own identifying purposes. If you know the proper name, please let me know!

Alula's Element Chant

Come sit with me, so I may listen, listen to the whispers of the gentle breeze.
Calling, calling,
Bring here with you knowledge of the wind, a story of life I need to know.
Calling, calling, Calling, calling,

Come sit with me, so I may see, see the colors of the burning flame.
Calling, calling.
Bring here with you courage and strength to will on forward, towards the light.
Calling, calling, Calling, calling,

Come sit with me so I may taste, taste the tears of sorrow and joy.
Calling, calling,
Bring here with you healing waters, so I may dare taste the power of love.
Calling, calling, Calling, calling,

Come sit with me so I may touch, touch in silence the wisdom of earth.
Calling, calling,
Bring here with you, patience and growth, so I may grow solid and wise.
Calling, calling, Calling, calling,

Hear me calling, see me dancing, taste my tears and touch my soul.

Barge of Heaven

Your crescent shaped barge of heaven
So well belayed, so well belayed.
Full of loveliness like the new moon (bis)
Your fertile fields well watered (bis)
The hillock lands well watered too (bis)
At your mighty rising (bis)
The vines rise up and the fields rise up (bis)
And the desert blooms in green (bis)
Just like a living garden (bis)

In the heat of the sun you are shade: A well of water in a dry dry land (bis)
Swelling fruits to feed the hungry: Sweet cream to quench our thirst (bis)

Words adapted by Starhawk from Sumerian text (tr. T. Jacobsen, D. Wolkstein and S. N. Kramer)

Besom Chant

Besom, Besom long and lithe
Made of ash and willow withe
Tied with thongs of willow bark
By running stream at moonset dark.
With the pentagram indighted
As the ritual fire is lighted;
Sweep ye circle, Deosil,
Sweep out evil, sweep out ill,
Make the round of the ground
Where we do the Lady's will.

Besom, besom, Witches' (or: Lady's) broom
Sweep out darkness, sweep out doom
Rid ye Lady's hallowed ground
Of demons, imps and Hel's red hounds;
Then stand ye down on Her green earth
By running stream or Mistress' hearth,
'Till called upon at Sabbath night
To cleanse once more the dancing site.

So mote it be

By Ed Fitch

Ursula's Dedication Chant

And 'lo, down in my soul, I hear Her calling me down my road
And whispering softly on wings through every tree
She's calling me, Mother of earth and sea, She's calling me

And 'lo, down in my soul, I hear Him calling me down my road
And shining down on me with all the courage I need
He's calling me, Father of sun and seed, He's calling me

And 'lo, down in my soul, I hear them calling me down my Road
And whispering softly, and shining down on me
They're calling me, Mother of Earth and Sea, Father of Sun and Seed
They're calling me

Way To The Well

We will never, ever lose our way to the well of her memory
And the power of her living flame, it will rise, it will rise again

She is hidden, but Her children have not forgotten, they will worship her
In the meadows when the moon is full it will rise, it will rise again

By Starhawk and Rose May Dance
Melody adapted from a South African Freedom Song.

We All Come From The Goddess/Hoof And Horn

We all come from the Goddess: And to her we shall return
Like a drop of rain: Flowing to the ocean

Corn and grain, corn and grain: All that falls shall rise again
