The glossary's kinda empty right now. If you see a term you want clarified, let me know. Drop me an email and I will do my best to get it up there.
Back-Chants - A repetitive chorus that can be sung at the same time as others in the group are singing or chanting the main chant or song. The back-chant does not have to have any meaning, but it should keep the beat while speeding up the tempo. A back-chant adds dimension to a chant and can be quite mesmorizing.
Besom - (Also spelled "besome") A stiff sweeping broom made of twigs (generally willow withes). It is a ritual broom used by the Handmaiden or Priestess to cleanse the circle of negative/unwanted energies. A besom chant is sung, spoken or whispered as the circle is swept.
Dirge - A funeral song of lament, usually sung in a Minor scale such as Dorian or Aeolian.
Sabbat - In a nutshell, the Sabbats are the 8 pagan holidays on the wheel of the year, roughly 2 per season. They are indeed based on the cycle of the seasons and comprise of 4 major sabbats and 4 minor sabbats. The minor sabbats coincide with the solstices and equinoxes. There are many names for each of the sabbats, and you will find all of these names interchangeably throughout my site. We begin with the pagan New Year at Samhain, (Halloween, All Hollow's Eve) in the late Fall, followed by the Winter sabbats of Yule (the Winter Solstice) and Imbolc (Candlemas). Next are the Spring sabbats of Ostara (Ladyday, Spring Equinox) coinciding with Easter, followed by Beltane (Beltaine, May Day). In the summer we have Litha (Midsummer, Summer Solstice) and Lammas (Lunasa, Lughnasadh). In the early fall is Mabon (Lammas, Autumn Equinox) and then once again find ourselves at Samhain.
